Dnd 5e bastard sword stats- The traditional latemedieval longsword is the same thing as a bastard sword, in that it could be used onehanded or two handed There is no difference in that case Some were essentially arming swords with long handles, some were sort of middleground between a twohandedonly sword and an arming sword, some were technically usable with oneLongsword (DnD) The longsword is a straight, two edged sword with a hilt long enough to fit a second hand if necessary The guard is tyically a simple cross but may have elaborate defences It is only used as a slashing weapon and thus may be fullered, but would not have a spine or diamond sectioned blade

— Peter Cherico (@PC_MRCC) A bastard sword is a type of longsword, and in 5E, you can wield a longsword with one or two handsA bastard sword is a versatile weapon, so medium characters may wield it twohanded to deal 1 extra damage Small characters must wield it twohanded, and they deal no extra damage for doing so No class has proficiency with the bastard sword as a class trait, but any character can become proficient by taking a Weapon Proficiency featSword types in AD&D are a mess If you look at the weight of the long sword, it comes in at the onehanded range, lighter than a broad sword Here is a decent writeup that might shed some light Ultimately, it's your world, do what you're comfortable with 8 level 2 garumoo Op 2y Grognard in search of grog
Yeah I agree the 5e longsword fits fairly well with what most people think of as a hand and half sword The default for the bastard sword is to be wielded twohanded It costs a feat to be able to use it with one hand and do the same base damage You trade off the 15x strength bonus to damage for the 1d10 base damage that's a larger damage die than any other singlehanded weapon while using a shieldBastard swords had a longer grip than a onehanded sword and a shorter blade than a greatsword for extra precision in the strike It was also more powerful than a longsword due to its increased weight

For this type of sword I think the 5e longsword works with the versitile property (even if it is 'slashing' damage) For proper 2 handers like a zweihander which could be over 3kg then 5e greatsword stats work, IMO Edit for waffle; In 5E, the game doesn't require a separate bastard sword entry, any more than it requires a separate broadsword entry They're both covered by "longsword" They're both covered by "longsword" The differences are entirely narrativeBastard Sword Also known as a HandandaHalf Sword, is typically a slightly lighter variant of the long sword with a shorter hilt that the second hand can still grab A Bastard Sword can also refer to an ordinary longsword if it is used in a fighting style that utilizes both single and double handed techniques, as opposed to only doublehanded
Answer (1 of 4) Yes any weapon you can use in one hand can be used with a shield The longsword has the "Versatile" property Meaning you can use it Either one handed or two handed it has a 1d8 damage when used with one hand and a 1d10 when used with two hands As long as you use itThe middle ground between an arming sword and a longsword sometimes called a "hand and a half sword" this blade's hilt is short enough to be used in one hand while also being long enough to warrant two hands if needed though it isn't as effective as a longsword While using the Versatile property of this weapon, it loses its Finesse propertyDnD 5e does not give you a good variety so I have expanded on them with the help of 57 other sites The only twist for Legon is the level of craftsmanship and condition There can be 4 levels of craftsmanship for weapons
The "Bastard Sword" and "Katana" existed in 35 because you could pay a feat (Exotic Weapon) to get die in damage Also since the 80's "katanas" have always been the "best" sword in any game Last edited by FullMetalBunny One of my pet peeves about D&D is that the magical swords are nearly always European longswords It seems as if Excalibur was the perfect model for ALL magical swords ever to be created Personally, I like to mix things up I like to use many different types of swords in my campaign worlds, just as there are many different types of swords among all the cultures of theProperties Bastard Sword 25 GP 1d6 slashing 3 lbs finesse, versatile (2d4) This replaces the rapier with a more balanced option that adheres to 5e's usual weapon design rules Plus, it's the only weapon with 2d4 damage die, carving out a unique place along side the normal 1d8 weapons
